The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild features numerous environmental puzzles that require players to manipulate light and shadow to uncover hidden challenges. One such objective is the Secret of the Snowy Peaks quest, located in the cold mountain region of Mount Granajh. By following specific steps at a precise time of day, players can activate the glowing pedestal on Daval Peak and reveal the Suma Sahma Shrine.
Locating the Quest Log and Pedestal
To begin this quest, travel to Mount Granajh in the Gerudo Highlands region. Near the mountain summit, you will discover a ruined cabin containing a diary known as the Mountain Peak Log. Reading this log triggers the quest and offers clues about casting a cold shadow across the pedestal situated on the nearby cliffside.
The pedestal is built directly onto the side of Daval Peak, overlooking the surrounding snowy landscapes. It remains inactive for most of the day, making timing crucial for solving the riddle. Players should familiarize themselves with the area before attempting to trigger the mechanism.
Timing and Shadow Mechanics
The pedestal begins to glow during the late afternoon, specifically around 16:00 in-game time. During this narrow window, a shadow must fall directly over the glowing center of the structure to trigger its activation. Planning ahead ensures you have the necessary items ready before the sun sets.
You can wait for the correct time by starting a campfire inside the ruined cabin using wood and flint. Waiting until noon gives you sufficient time to position yourself on the cliff before the pedestal lights up. Making proper preparations prevents missed opportunities during the short activation window.
How to Cast the Cold Shadow
There are two primary methods to project the required shadow onto the pedestal. The simplest method involves lifting one of the large snowballs scattered near the mountain peak and holding it over your head while standing at the cliff edge. Position yourself so the shadow of the snowball aligns perfectly with the center of the pedestal.
Alternatively, players can use the Cryonis Rune to create an ice pillar in the small pool of water located directly in front of the pedestal. As the afternoon sun dips low, the height of the ice pillar casts a long shadow across the target. Either technique satisfies the quest conditions and causes the ancient structure to rise from the snow.
Claiming Your Rewards
Once the shadow aligns correctly, the pedestal turns blue and the Suma Sahma Shrine emerges from the frozen ground. Entering this shrine grants immediate access to Suma Sahma's Blessing, requiring no additional puzzles inside.
Inside the chest, players can collect a powerful Moonlight Scimitar before speaking with the monk. Completing the trial awards a Spirit Orb, which can be exchanged for health or stamina upgrades. This completes the quest and adds a permanent fast travel location to your map.
